STD Symptoms – NGU
If NGU symptoms do occur they usually show up within 1 to 5 weeks after infection and may last only a few hours or days.
In mild cases, symptoms may not show up for several months. However, some men never develop symptoms. Women almost never show signs of infection or they may be so mild they go unnoticed.
If you do get signs and symptoms you might notice:
In Men
- A white or cloudy discharge from the penis (The amount of discharge may vary from a little to quite a lot.)
- Difficulty, burning or pain when urinating
- Itching, irritation, or tenderness inside the penis
- The feeling that you need to pass urine frequently
- Underwear stain
If the symptoms are ignored, the discharge may decrease although the infection is still present. If left untreated, the infection may move up around the testicles causing pain, swelling and sterility. The infection may also spread to other parts of the body causing severe illness.
In Women
- Discharge from the vagina
- Burning or pain when urinating
- Abdominal pain
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding (may be an indication that the infection has progressed to Pelvic inflammatory Disease (PID))
Anal or Oral Infections
Anal infection may result in rectal itching, discharge, or pain on defecation.
Oral infection may also occur. Most (90%) are asymptomatic, but some people might have a sore throat.
